[Natural Health ~ Meditation Reflections] Get Ready: From Winter To Spring!

March is here... one of my favourite time of the year! I did my first chakra meditation workshop this year over the weekend in trendy Shoreditch, Central London. I wanted to share the topic we went through! It was a lot of fun!

Get Ready & Tune in: From Winter To Spring!

There is a lot of new energy to take in these days… I can’t help but notice how the timing works out with our first Mercury Retrograde of 2013 happening right now (Feb 23rd – Mar 17th in Pisces) and this week’s full moon energy on Monday … some may say that is a bad sign lol! :)
Mercury represents how we communicate and interact with others. Whenever Mercury goes Retrograde (or backwards) there is a tendency for all properties of this planet to go haywire. Mercury rules computers, cars, cell phones, travel, travel schedules and all things related to how we communicate and utilise these methods of communication. This is a time where things in this area seem to go wrong… you may already be feeling some frustrations in this area over the last week, before this event?
throat-chakra-231x300
Fear not! :)
This is a good way to end the Winter because we are now gently moving our energy upwards, from the lower chakras of Autumn/Winter into the Higher chakras from the Solar Plexus to our Crown… and the area to work on during the Mercury Retrograde is our communication throat chakra.
Take a huge step back!
Breathe deeply. Be patient and observe. Take this moment to notice how you are communicating with YOUR SELF first… especially when frustrating situations arise around you.
Our communication chakra is not just about how we express our Self to others and our outer world… it’s also a tool to re-connect with our own inner dialogue… the thoughts we have in our mind in our every day life.
The throat chakra is connected to the releasing process… exploring our feelings through words, creative activities and anything that will help channel our inner energy outwards. This way, we can channel any negative thought processes in a healthy way… instead of an unhealthy way (for example: through emotional eating, smoking, alcohol etc)
Each challenge you face during this Mercury Retrograde is an opportunity to really check-in and watch your instant re-actions… there are no rights/wrongs here, just  observe your Self in the next few weeks.

Questions for reflection & meditation work:

When I am confronted with a miscommunication with another person, do I …Take the time to listen/understand/find out the reasons behind it first? …Jump in with my own  assumptions/opinions/reactions?
When something negative confronts me, do I …Find it easy to let go? …Get caught up in my emotions, even long after the situation has passed?
When I am alone, how much of this time do I spend ...Enjoying the moment? …Worrying? …Giving my Self positive feedback? …Being creative? …Doing thing I love? …Planning for the future? …Thinking of the past?

Exercise: Shut Your Monkey Mind!

Mind monkey or monkey mind, from Chinese xinyuan and Sino-Japanese shin’en 心猿 [lit. "heart-/mind-monkey"], is a Buddhist term meaning “unsettled; restless; capricious; whimsical; fanciful; inconstant; confused; indecisive; uncontrollable”[Wikipedia info]
For this exercise, we will focus on the power of affirmations!
Steps:
• Get a piece of paper – or use this as part of your journal work.
• Split the page in 2 halves – by drawing a vertical line down the middle.
• On the left hand side, write down the top 5 regular negative thoughts you hear your Self saying in your mind.
• On the right hand side, next to each negative thought on the left, write down a positive affirmation that will turn this negative thought around.
For example:
Left hand side, negative thought – “I don’t feel good enough. “
Right hand side, positive affirmation: “I love and appreciate my journey as I grow and learn.”
• Now, every time you find your mind chatter saying any of these negative thoughts, quickly replace it with the positive affirmation. Say this affirmation a few times if you like. In time, this will re-program your thought patterns.

Other areas to work on as we slowly transition to Spring:

Get out!
In Autumn/Winter, the colder weather often gives us an opportunity to go into semi-hibernation and enjoy more nights-in and indoor life in general. As the days start to feel lighter and longer, maybe it’s time to slowly change your social routines too – by making more time to go out – by your Self or with friends/family. Wrap up warm if it’s still cold and get out more lol… even if it’s just to take a walk around your neighbourhood.
You might like to slowly increase your physical activity, even if you already go to the gym or work-out in other ways. Exercise is an awesome releasing and grounding tool! :)
Simplify!
Indoor life can mean that we get attached to comforting stuff at home… a good way to shift the energy in your home life is to slowly simplify these things… an early Spring clean or an energy space clearing will allow new things/energy into your personal space – read more about this here!
Introduce more fruits into your diet
The colder seasons usually offer some great veggies – but as we gear towards the warmer times of the year, slowly add more fruits into your daily diet. More fruit smoothies and fruit salads are great :)
Lighten up!
Colours have a powerful effect on us and in most parts of the world, Winter tends to be a much darker season – and this can often translate in our clothing! Slowly transition into brighter clothing and colours – let your colours be an expression of what you feel! Read more about this here.
Set new intentions for the Sun months
Spring/Summer/Sun months is about expression – moving from our inner world to our outer world, showing up and expressing all the inner work we have been doing during the Autumn/Winter/Moon months. Again, this is strongly connected to our throat chakra.
Set your intentions for what you would like to bring into this new time of the year…How can you express YOU in everything you do and show your inner light?
For March and throughout the Sun months, let’s March forward with some positive energy :)

5 Summer Holistic/Creative Inspirations!

I haven't done a proper blog in here for AGES! So, where have I been? With the hotter days, I'm trying to make the most of it! Which has meant that FB, Blogger and other online websites haven't been on my mind as much!

This blog post is more like a summary of mini holistic/creative inspiration bites that I've been doing/seeing/enjoying lately! Simple, but make me smile!

Summer Tea Party!

Now that it has mildly stopped pouring down with rain, Smmer tea parties are perfect... create your own vibe with meditations, music, good friends and these lovely little gems that always steal the show! Flowering teas...
Gorgeous!

Block Party!

After the British royal wedding and everyone talking about neighbourhood block parties, I couldn't help but enjoy a few less traditional ones at my end of London!

Turning Into A Soup-Aholic!

I'm not a fan of diets - I just feel that eating healthy with exercise always does the trick! But what I do observe is that during the Summer, I am less likely to eat as much as in the colder months... it's always been this way for me! So, to keep it healthy and quick, I'm getting into Summer soups... here is one I eat often a this time of year.

Walking My Way To Feeling Good!

I don't drive so public transport is a big part of my life - it can really put me in a bad mood with the crowds and as for Summer heat... smelly sweaty armpits right over my head in the train is something I'll do ANYTHING to avoid. Solution? WALK!!!

I went on a recent holiday for just 3 days and I walked everywhere in the new city - I lost 5 kilos which was the fastest I've ever lost any weight! And I felt GOOD!

Barefoot Healing!

Summer means bearing our feet in cute sandals... but it can also mean enjoying the sensations of walking or jogging barefoot! Of course, not recommended on city side walks or places where dog doo-doo and dirty puddles run wild... but walking in the park on the grass feels amazing! Would you believe that it also has some great health benefits too lol... read here.

Enjoy ;o)

If It Takes 21 Days To Break A Habit...

21 days doesn't seem that long...
what would you change?

I used to think of habits as a negative thing/word... like the time I had habis that I felt were holding me back, like smoking. But the more I look at this statement, the more I find positivity in the possibility that with the initial challenge of 21 days (and many boosters afterwards to maintain it in place), the word "habit" can bring a very real and positive life change...

Like the habit of praising your Self when you have achieved something and celebrating your next step forward or starting a new fitne plan like yoga.

What will you be changing and rearranging lol?

Re-AFFRIM-ed.

Today I HAD to re-affrim a few things in my life...

I am the total of my own choices - and I have no regrets about them.

What may have seemed wrong now was the best thing at the time, for what I knew at the time, for how I was feeling at he time... At the time, this was my best choice. I trust my Self enough to know that I cannot compare what I know now to then... At the time, I was who and what was good for me... at that time. No regrets, just good lessons. And now that I am here at this time, I know I have learned so much!

My body is my responsibility.

... And no one else's. I decide how to treat it and if I am not nourishing it and keeping it in tip top form, then it's my responsibility to put that right. My body is a Self expression of who I am - how I dress it, how I choose to wear my natural hair, who I choose to share it with... it's all my business and responsibility. I will make sure that I do my best to treat this spiritual vehicle the best way I know how. And during those days when I can't fit into my skinny jeans, when my belly is growing with a child or my hormones are jumping off the walls, I will trust my Self to know what to do because this body is changing, growing and evolving with time and age - different stages of life. And somehwre in the future, when I look into the mirror and glance at my laughter lines, I will laugh harder and appreciate how far I have come with this body of mine!

Re-defining Self is just a natural way of moving on.

Change is transition. Change is natural. To re-invent your Self is about exploring Self and experimenting. The sooner I get used to regular changes, the sooner I can start to learn that detachment from a stage will bring you to another level of being... happy. I am not afraid of change. I am not afraid to experience the discomfort of leaving my comfort zone. It just means I am growing... and it should be a time to celebrate the next stage ahead.

There is a reason for everyone you meet.

...Whether they become a close friend for life or just a casual good morning nod on the neighborhood street, there is somethng amazing about connecting with people. Everyone has a story to tell. Maybe it's time to stop and listen for a while, take the time to actually listen to some of the people who pass you by in life. What would you learn? For once, stop indulging in my own world and detach from it for a while to really see others.

The great outdoors.

Yes, the UK is pouring with rain most days of the year and when it actually does shine, people often moan that it's too hot outside lol. Can we ever win?!? The great outdoors is a topic here. And am I guilty of getting lazy because there is no sun? Yes. But when I start to think about how amazing the seasons are, I start to appreciate the cold, the snow and now... the sun. maybe its time to get to know more green spots around me. Stretch. Sit for a while - in any weather - and just enjoy! I LOVE the sun, but I think the great outdoors should be  just as great at other times of the year too!

Never box LOVE.

... it just makes sense on many different levels/meanings.

Being alone is valuable time.

There will be times when you will be alone - you will want to go to a concert and no-one is free to go or when you pass by an inviting restaurant and have no one to share a meal with... So what then? Just go and do it alone! I have friends who hate the thought of their own company... they would much rather go somewhere with a person who they don't like that much just so they are not alone. "Little Miss No Mates". There is freedom in doing things alone. It's empowering and enjoyable... and whats best, there is no one you need to explain your Self to. Why stop trying and doing things just because your friends are out of town? Who knows who you might meet and what you might learn?

This moment is perfect.

... Enough said!     ;o)

... So it may not be right for everyone, bu this is my version to re-AFFIRM.

Time To Work On Inner-Fire: Metabolism!

I am being so inspired by a lady I see every week to do therapy swaps with. Between workouts, therapy sessions, sharing experiences and long thai yoga massages, I'm learning more and more about what it means to be grounded and trying to find new ways to get my body running as healthy and efficiently as possible! So this is a topic that will keep the body flowing much better and with more fire energy!

Twelve Ways to Revive and Boost Your Metabolism
by Mary J. Shomon

When you're hypothyroid, fatigue, difficulty losing weight, or continued weight gain can all be attributable to a drop in the metabolism that frequently accompanies hypothyroidism. Even after your hypothyroidism is properly treated with thyroid hormone replacement, you may find that your metabolism has not bounced back to where it was before. This sluggishness in your metabolism can leave you feeling exhausted, and finding that you can't lose weight, despite a healthy low-calorie diet.

Here are some ways you can help revive and boost your metabolism.

Make sure you eat breakfast.

If you don't eat breakfast, you slow down your metabolism and send the body into "hoard mode," thinking it's starving because you're going a long period of time frequently 8 to 10 hours or more, without food.

Eat the majority of your food earlier in the day.

Dinner should be your lightest meal, and some experts recommend you don't anything after 8 p.m., or any later than 3 to 4 hours before bedtime. This helps your body process and burn the food when you're aware and moving around and burning more calories per hour.

Don't starve.

Dropping your calorie intake below 1,000 calories a day will signal to your body that you are in starvation mode, and will slow down your metabolism.

Eat smaller meals more frequently.

Smaller, more frequent meals keeps your blood sugar stable and provides a steady source of energy to fuel metabolism.

Get enough aerobic exercise.

As much as you can is really a help for your metabolism, and if you do it in the morning, you'll raise your metabolism all day.

Build muscle with weight training or resistance exercise.

At least two to three times a week, you should add weight training or progressive resistance exercise that builds muscle. Muscle burns more calories than fat, and the more muscle you have, the more calories you burn, even at rest!

Water, water, water!!

You've heard it before, but drink those 8 8-ounce glasses of water every day. The energy burning process of metabolism needs water to work effectively.

Get enough B vitamins.

Among supplements, if you are suffering from flagging energy, you need to make sure that you are getting enough B vitamins. Vitamin B-12 in particular is one that is essential for energy. To ensure you're getting enough B vitamins, consider taking a B complex, plus a separate sublingual B-12.

Try a supplement for fatigue.

Another type of supplement useful for fatigue is in the area of substances that the body naturally produces for energy production. Supplements in this category include:
Co-enzyme Q10, also known as CoQ10, which supplies energy to muscles
L- Carnitine
NADH (Nicotinamide Adenine Finucleotide) which helps cells convert food into energy
Green Tea extract

Try Chinese Herbs

In terms of herbal remedies, while you should avoid ephedra and ma huang stimulants, you can ask your practitioner about schizandra--a Chinese herb that is used for fatigue. Ginseng is also popular for energy. Before trying any herbs, supplements, or vitamins, you should of course consult with your practitioner to ensure they are safe for you. Ginseng, for example, is not recommended for someone with high blood pressure and many herbs and supplements are not recommended during pregnancy.

Try mate tea

In the process of writing my book, Living Well With Hypothyroidism: What Your Doctor Doesn't Tell You...That You Need to Know, I had the opportunity to interview herbal and aromatherapy expert Mindy Green of the Herbal Research Foundation. I asked her what, as a person with hypothyroidism, I should reach for when I'm just completely out of steam, and am ready for a giant double espresso in order to make it through the day. Mindy, said, unquestionably, mate tea. Mate, pronounced, "mah-tay," is an herbal tea native to South America. Mate is considered far more nutritious than black tea or coffee, and though it also has some caffeine, its effects are energizing, rather than making people jittery.

Consider Energy Work

Energy and bodywork , such as yoga, tai chi, qigong (pronounced chee-gung), and Reiki, can all help in adding and balancing energy. In qigong, tai chi, and yoga, gentle movements are used to move energy along the energy pathways of the body. In Reiki, a practitioner helps open up energy channels.

(Remember to always check with your practitioner before starting any herbs or supplements.)

Hitting 3-0... What Were/Are Your Experiences? Share!

Greetings!

I was having a laugh with my SO the other day about growing older... I remeber having an anxious "moment" when I was 9, sitting in the classroom, bored of my teacher's ramblings and thinking that I was going to be 10 - And my panic was "Oh my God, I'm going to be so old!" LOL.

I'm a 4th July baby, so I still have a little while still until i reach my 30th Earthday... but it got me thinking about my old expectations and now, how my 20's have turned out and if this is really the place I want to be when I hit 30. I feel like the 20's have been such a great time for discovery - hard lessons mainly, but very much needed! And I actually can't wait to start my 30's - It just feels like it was about time!

A question out there for all of you...

I want to know what hitting 30 means/meant to you...
What do you expect to achieve before your 30's?
Were you happy or not looking forward to your 30th Earthday?
Did your expectations at a younger age (teens, early 20's) of being in your 30's turn out to be true?
What advice would you give to anyone about lessons to keep in mind when turning 30?
For the older women reading this, what advice and words of wisdom would you share (your top 5 tips if you like) on growing older in general?

A woman in her her 30's is ____(fill in the blank)____

Just a few Q's for reflection, but please do share!

Work That Big Ol' Brain Of Yours!!!

Janine Jackson (from the great blog PlantFolk) has kindly let me re-post this fantastic article!

Work that big ole' brain of yours or 'get your sylar on' for the Heroes fans ;)

1.Breath deep. More air in means more oxygen in the blood and therefore in the brain. Breath through your nose and you'll notice that you use your diaphragm more, drawing air deeper into your lungs. Several deep breaths can also help to relax you, which is conducive to clearer thinking.

2. Meditate. A simple meditation you can do right now is just closing your eyes and paying attention to your breath. Tensing up your muscles and then relaxing them to start may help. When your mind wanders, just bring your attention back to your breath. Five or ten minutes of this will usually relax you, clear your mind, and leave you more ready for any mental task.

3. Sit up straight. Posture affects your thinking process. Prove it to yourself by doing math in your head while slouching, looking at the floor and letting your mouth hang open. Then do the mental math while sitting up straight, keeping your mouth closed and looking forward or slightly upwards. You'll notice that it's easier to think with the latter posture.

4.Good thinking habits. Just use a problem solving technique for several weeks and it will become a habit. Redesign everything you see for a while, and that will become a habit. You can develop many good thinking habits with some effort, and then be more resourceful effortlessly from that point on. Use the power of habit.

5.Use extra time. This is time that is otherwise wasted or just under-utilized. Driving time, time spent in waiting rooms, or even time spent raking your yard can be included in this. With a tape player and a trip to a public library, you can start to use this time to listen to books-on-tape. You may spend 200 hours a year in your car. What could you learn in that time?

6.Learn a language. Learning a new language has been shown to halt the age-related decline in brain function. It also introduces your mind to new concepts and new ways of looking at things (in English we are afraid, whereas in Spanish we have fear). It is one of the best brain exercises.

7.Rosemary. This common herb may have an effect on the brain when the scent is inhaled. Some people swear that just sniffing rosemary wakes up their brain.

8.Mindfulness exercises. Concentration and clear thinking are more or less automatic once you remove distractions. Learn to stop and watch your busy mind. As you notice things that are subtly bothering you, deal with them. This might mean making a phone call you need to make, or putting things on a list so you can forget them for now. With practice, this becomes easier, and your thinking becomes more powerful.

9.Write. Writing is good for your mind in a number of ways. It is a way to tell your memory what is important, so you'll recall things more easily in the future. It is a way to clarify your thinking. It is a way to exercise your creativity and analytical ability. Diaries, idea-journals, poetry, note-taking and story-writing are all ways to use writing to boost your brain power.

10.Develop your intuition. Intuition can be an important part of brainpower. Einstein and others have relied heavily on their intuitive hunches.

11.Avoid foods that cause subtle allergies. These can include wheat, corn, peanuts and dairy products. Watch yourself to see if you have a problem with any of these. They cause digestive problems and brain fog in some people.

12.Sleep better. As long as you get a certain amount of sleep - probably a minimum of five hours - the quality seems to be more important than the quantity. Also, short naps in the afternoon seem to work well to recharge the brain for some people.

13.Avoid sugar. Any simple carbohydrates can give you "brain fog." Sometimes called the "sugar blues" as well, this sluggish feeling makes it hard to think clearly. It results from the insulin rushing into the bloodstream to counteract the sugar rush. Avoid pasta, sugars, white bread and potato chips before any important mental tasks.

14.Hypnosis audios. The power of suggestion is real, and one way to use it is with hypnosis tapes, CD's or downloads. This type of brain "programming" has more evidence for it than subliminals.

15.Speed reading. Contrary to what many believe, your comprehension of material often goes up when you learn to speed-read. You get to learn a lot more in less time, and it is definitely a good brain exercise.

16.Exercise. Long term exercise can boost brainpower. Anything that affects physical health in a positive way probably helps the brain too. Cognitive function is improved immediately after just ten minutes of exercise. If you need a brain recharge, you might want to walk up and down the stairs a few times.

17.Imaginary friends. Talking to and getting advice from characters in your mind can be a great way to access the information in your subconscious mind. Imagine a conversation with a person who has a lot of knowledge in the area you want advice in.i hear and see you laughing! lol

18.Develop your creativity. Creativity gives power to your thinking. creativity! yes!http://plantfolk.wordpress.com/2010/01/19/colorful-living/

19.Learn more efficiently. When you decide to learn something, take notes from the start. Leave each "learning session" with a question or two in mind, to create anticipation and curiosity. Take short breaks, so there will be more beginnings and endings to your studies (Things learned at the beginning or ending of a class or session are remembered better).

20.Use techniques for clear thinking. Cluttered rooms and offices can contribute to cluttered thinking. Organize a space for mental work. Sigh, stretch, and take a deep breath before you start on a tough mental job. Plan some distraction-free time for brainstorming.

21.Talk. Talking is only good for the brain if you are actually exercising it, of course. Try explaining something that you don't understand very well to a friend, though, and you'll notice that the process of explaining will help you clarify your understanding.

22.Do something you enjoy. This is a way to both lower stress and rev up your brain. The key is to do something active. Watching TV doesn't count. Whether it is playing Scrabble or building birdhouses, when you are actively engaged in an activity that you enjoy, you worry less about things and you start to think better.

23.Adjust your beliefs. Believe you are smarter, and you'll become smarter. For this, affirmations may work, but even better is evidence. Make a note of your successes. Tell yourself, "Hey, that was really creative," when you do something creative. When you have a good idea, make a note of it. Gather the evidence for your own intelligence and you'll start to experience more of it.

24.Brain exercises. Do math in your mind while driving. Think of a new use for everything you see. Regular use of the brain has been shown to generate new neuronal growth, and even halt the decline of mental function that often comes with age.

25.Learn new things. This is another way to exercise the brain. It can also be done with little time investment if you use books-on-tapes while driving.

26.Walk. Exercise has been shown to benefit the brain, and walking is one of the best exercises for many. It is low impact, and the rhythmic nature of it seems to put you in a state that is very conducive to clear thinking. In fact, carry a tape recorder with you to take notes, and a twenty minute walk can be a great way to solve problems.

27.Model others. Find others that are creative, intelligent, or very productive. Do what they do, and think what they think. This is a key principle of neuro-linguistic programming. Be careful about taking their advice, though. Successful people often don't really understand why they are successful. Do what they do, not what they say.

28. Avoid unnecessary arguments. When you defend a position too vigorously, especially when it is just to "win" the argument, you invest our ego into it. This is not conducive to the easy acceptance and use of new information. In other words, you put your mind in a rut, and you dig it deeper with each argument. Debate can be a valuable thing, but when the ego takes over, the mind closes a little. This is not a recipe for better thinking.

29.Laugh. The release of endorphins caused by laughter lowers stress levels, which is good for long term brain health. Laughter also tends to leave you more open to new ideas and thoughts.

30.Play. Stimulating the brain causes measurable changes in the structure of the brain. New connections are made and new brain cells are grown. Intellectual play, as well as any playing that involves hand-eye coordination stimulates the brain. have you played today? or even within the last week? hmmmm?http://plantfolk.wordpress.com/2009/05/26/you-need-some-p-in-your-life/

31.Do puzzles. Crossword puzzles, lateral thinking puzzles, and even good riddles are a great way to get brain exercise. You can work on them while waiting for a dentist appointment, or on the bus, if you are short on time.

32.Sing. When you are alone in your car, try singing about something you are working on. This taps into and exercises your right brain. Have you ever noticed how it is easier to rhyme when you sing than when you just speak or write? This is because the right brain is better at pattern recognition. By doing this brain exercise regularly you can train yourself to tap into the power of the right brain. This will make you a more effective problem-solver. If you doubt the distinction between the hemispheres of the brain, look at how stutterers can stop stuttering as soon as they start singing. Try it.

33.Nuts. University students in Brazil and other South American countries often eat several Brazil nuts before an exam, believing they are good for their mental power. The evidence is starting to confirm this. Other nuts that have minerals and amino acids that are beneficial to the brain include almonds and walnuts.

34.Olive oil. High in mono-unsaturated fat, olive oil has been shown to improve memory.

35.Vitamin supplements. In studies, children scored higher on tests when on a regimen of daily vitamin supplements.

36.Fiber. It isn't just what goes in, but what comes out that is important to brain function. Toxic build-up in the body and brain can cause "brain fog." People often report clearer thinking as one of the benefits of curing their constipation.

37.Self awareness. This may not seem important to brain power, but it is. When you know yourself better, you can avoid the usual effects of ego and emotion in your seemingly "rational" thinking. Or you can at least take it into account. Watch yourself, especially as you explain things or argue.

38.Motivate yourself. Motivation is as important to mental tasks as it is to any other. Learn a few simple techniques for self motivation.

39.Avoid too much stress. "Stress causes brain damage." Long term stress has repeated been shown to hurt the brain, not to mention the rest of the body. Learn a few stress reduction techniques if you get stressed out often.

40.Get educated. Scientists have known for a while that the less educated get alzheimer's more frequently. Education in any area seems to make the brain stronger.

41.Avoid too much fat. In laboratory studies, animals consistently learn slower when they are on a diet high in fat. Type of fat may make a difference, so you may want to stick to using olive oil and other non-saturated fats. Saturated fats have been shown to actually stunt the growth of brain cells.

42.Eat less. Overeating has the immediate effect of redirecting more blood to the digestive process, leaving less for the brain. Long term, it can cause arterial obstructions that reduce blood flow to the brain permanently. In at least one study, rats on a restricted-calorie diet had more brainpower.

43.Avoid suspect foods. There is evidence that the following foods can be bad for your brain: Artificial food colorings, artificial sweeteners, colas, corn syrup, frostings, high-sugar drinks, hydrogenated fats, sugars, white bread, and any white-flour products.

44.Eat breakfast. When kids who didn't eat breakfast started to eat it, researchers found that their math scores went up a whole grade on average.

45.Avoid diabetes. The development of diabetes coincides with a dropping of IQ scores.

46.Eat foods high in antioxidants. Antioxidants protect all your cells, including brain cells. Some of the foods highest in antioxidants include: prunes, raisins, blueberries, blackberries, garlic, kale, cranberries, strawberries, spinach, and raspberries.

47.Folic acid. According to one study, 200 micrograms of folic acid, the amount found in 3/4 cup of cooked spinach, alleviates depression and reverses memory loss.

48.Potential brain foods. Other foods that may be good for your brain include: Avocados, bananas, brewer's yeast. broccoli, brown rice, brussel sprouts, cantaloupe, collard greens, flaxseed oil, legumes, oranges, peas, potatoes, romaine lettuce, and spinach.

49.Vitamin E. 400 I.U.s of vitamin E daily. It is an antioxidant, and reduces the clogging of blood vessels, including those going in the brain.

50.Vitamin C. Taken in the form of orange juice in a study at the Texas Women's University, vitamin C increased the IQ scores of children.

51.Selenium. 100 micrograms of selenium has been shown to be a mood-elevator. Your brain almost certainly functions better when you are in a better mood. Foods rich in selenium include Brazil nuts and garlic.

52.Ask questions. This is a great way to keep your brain in shape. Just get in the habit of asking questions often, even if it is only in your own mind. Why are taller buildings better? What is the purpose of curbs? Ask anything that comes to mind, and ponder the possible answers. my first question to you is >http://plantfolk.wordpress.com/2010/04/14/what-do-you-want/

53.Sniff basil. This another of the herbs that may be good for your brain. No studies yet, but many report a brain boost from smelling basil.

54.Temperature. Many people have noted that they think better at certain temperatures. In general, it seems that being slightly cool, but not uncomfortable, is most conducive to good thinking. Try experimenting on yourself to see what temperature works best for you.

55.Use systems. From the time I was ten years old, 12 x 49 was always (12 x 50) - 12. It's easier to figure in your head this way (588, by the way). I didn't get any credit for my personal algorithms then, but they are selling these shortcuts on late-night TV now, because they work. You can find your own easier ways to do mental math or other mental tasks, or read a good book on them.

56.Make a brainpower plan. It takes about twenty to thirty days of repetition to establish new habits, many psychologists will tell you. This means that when you create your plan for better brainpower, be sure you plan to use that new problem solving technique, or eat those new brain foods for at least three weeks. You can use many of the brain boosters here and get immediate results, but it is creating new habits that will give you the most brainpower.
